IC 4617 is a type Sbc[1] spiral galaxy located in the Hercules constellation.

[2] It is located 553 million light-years from the Solar System and has an estimated diameter of 115,000 light-years thus making it slightly larger compared to the Milky Way.

[3] The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer, Edward Emerson Barnard or E. E. Barnard although no date of discovery was confirmed.

[4] IC 4617 is a member of Abell 2199[5][6] and happens to lie near towards the globular cluster, Messier 13.
