The area covered by this geographical indication comprises all the municipalities of the Balearic Islands.
There are currently about 300 hectares of vineyards and 37 wineries (bodegas) registered with the Regulatory Council.
The Romans were the first to import the vineyard and develop its cultivation in the Balearic Islands.
Proof of this was that the Arab Beni Abet offered King James I, when he conquered the island in 1229, grapes of excellent quality.
Between 1830 and 1834 there was a sharp decline due to the difficult economic conditions and the aphid plague.
