Izrael Abraham Staffel (1814–1884) was a Polish-Jewish inventor, watchmaker, mechanic, designer of calculating machines.
The result of ten years work, this machine was able to add, subtract, divide, multiply and obtain a square root.
[1] In 1846 Staffel's machine was shown at an exhibition in St Petersburg and received with high regard.
The machine was later presented to the Russian Emperor, who ordered that 1,500 silver roubles be paid to Staffel.
[1] He also designed and produced several other things; an anemometer; an apparatus for testing the composition of metal alloys based on Archimedes' principle; a ventilator fan; and a two-colour printing press.
