Tateno studied at the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku and is today a professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
Even after medical rehabilitation, he still had paralysis of the right side of his body; since his comeback in May 2004, he has therefore played exclusively with his left hand.
Numerous composers dedicated pieces to him specially tailored to his requirements.
Since 17 September 1990, he has been chairman of the Japanese Sibelius Society (日本シベリウス協会, Nihon Shiberiusu Kyōkai), of which he is a founding member.
