Born in Neubrandenburg, Timm studied from 1965 to 1970 at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig and especially violoncello with Friedemann Erben.
Especially during Kurt Masur's time as Gewandhauskapellmeister, he played solo concerts with the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
In 1988 Timm was appointed honorary professor at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig.
[2] Thomas Timm is the principal violinist of the Second Violin Group of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
[3] Andreas Timm works as deputy principal cellist with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
