He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in a field artillery battery of the 103rd Infantry Division.
After Army service, he received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1947 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Michigan Law School in 1950.
