Januarius Jingwa (JJ) Asongu (born 17 August 1970) is a Cameroonian-American academic, journalist, entrepreneur, and human rights activist.
[5] During his secondary and high school years, Asongu served as a leader of the Young Christian Students (YCS) in Kumbo Diocese.
Following his time at the seminary, Asongu pursued an academic career abroad, inspired by his mentor, the late Professor Bernard Fonlon, an ex-seminarian and the first Cameroonian to earn a PhD.
He became the first person from the Cameroons to be awarded the prestigious Press Fellowship[8] from the Nuffield Foundation at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
Asongu has spoken on controversial issues on many radio and TV stations in the Cameroons and has written op-eds for American newspapers.
In 2012, he founded Saint Monica University (SMU), a private educational institution headquartered in the United States, with active campuses in Buea and Kumba,Cameroon.
He has served on the boards of the National Association of African American Studies (NAAAS) and Affiliates,[16] and the Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERUDEF).
