Jean-Gabriel Castel

Jean-Gabriel Castel OC OOnt KC FRSC (17 September 1928 – 30 December 2023) was a French and Canadian law professor and Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus at Osgoode Hall Law School of York University,Toronto.

Born in Nice, France, he served in the French Resistance during World War II receiving military decorations for his service.

[1] In 1959, he moved to Osgoode Hall Law School and taught there until his retirement in 1999.

In 1985, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of being "known around the world as an authority on the subject of private international law".

[2] He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a member of the Order of Ontario.
