He mastered practically every branch of medieval learning, and had a thorough knowledge of the sources and the bibliography of his subjects.
His correspondence with President Bouhier was published in 1885 by Ernest Petit; his other letters were edited by the Société des Sciences Historiques et Naturelles de L'Yonne.
After his election as a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (1740), he produced a number of Mémoires that appeared in the Recueil of this society.
Adrien Augier resumed the work, and added a sixth volume containing an analytical table of contents.
His biography was written by Charles le Beau in the Histoire de l'Académie royale des Inscriptions,[5] and by H. Cocheris, in the preface to his edition.
