Her grandfather, James Darst, was a reporter for the St. Louis Globe Democrat as well as director of Fox Movietone News.

Darst's first cousin is Thomas French, Pulitzer Prize -winning journalist for the St. Petersburg Times.

[3] Darst's mother, Doris Jeanne Gissy, was, at age 14, the youngest person to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Her play, Je Regrette Tout!, based on the life of her mother and Edith Piaf, was produced by Phantom Theater in Vermont.

[7] In 2018 Darst adapted JAWS for the stage and recruited her family to be in it in Phantom Theater's barn in Warren, Vermont.
