He was elected as a member into the National Academy of Engineering in 2018 for the "development of data fusion-based quality methods and their implementation in multistage manufacturing systems".
Prior to joining Georgia Institute of Technology in 2008, he was the G. Lawton and Louise G. Johnson Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Shi has advised 38 Ph.D. graduates, 26 of whom have joined an academic industrial engineering department as a faculty member.
[6] Shi has published one book “Stream of Variation Modeling and Analysis for Multistage Manufacturing Processes”,[7] and more than 180 papers.
[8] Shi has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IISE Transactions (2017-2020), the flagship journal of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.
