Jose "Joe" Olivares (born August 1, 1906) was a Cuban professional baseball shortstop.
[1] According to the Milwaukee Journal reporter Sam Levy, Olivares was the first Cuban star in the American Association.
[1] He partnered with future Hall of Famer Billy Herman at second base to form the Colonels' double play combination that season, and 1920 World Series hero Bill Wambsganss was also a second baseman on that team.
[8] According to Levy, Cuban pitcher Gil Torres, who would pitch in the Major Leagues for the Washington Senators, was signed to his first pro contract in the US with the Milwaukee Brewers on the recommendation of Olivares.
[10] He played second base for the Johnnies because the shortstop was future Hall of Famer Joe Cronin.
