John A. Creighton

[2][3] Born in Licking County, Ohio, Creighton's first job was working for his brother Edward, installing a telegraph line from Cleveland to Toledo.

In 1865 after he was assaulted and his leg was broken, a local newspaper wrote, "We believe that the only way to kill John Creighton would be to cut his head off and then carry away the body."

[5] John's wife Sarah died September 3, 1888; before her death, she bequeathed a business block near Downtown Omaha to the yet-to-be-established Creighton College.

[4] In 1884 Creighton was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Chicago where Grover Cleveland was nominated for President of the United States.

[2] Creighton is also credited with establishing Omaha's St. Joseph's Hospital and bringing the first monastery of the Poor Clares in the country to the city.

The Creighton Orpheum Theater in Downtown Omaha was named in honor of John after he donated a significant portion of its construction costs.
