John E. Toews (born 1944) is a Canadian historian in the U.S., and Director of the Comparative History of Ideas Program, University of Washington from 1981 to 2010.
[1][2] A scholar of Hegel and Marx, Toews edited a publication of The Communist Manifesto in 1999.
Toews was born into a Mennonite family in Coaldale, Alberta, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba and graduated from Harvard University, with a Ph.D. in 1973.
