He was also the Whig Party nominee in first Wisconsin gubernatorial election, where he lost to Nelson Dewey.

Tweedy was prominent in business involving railroads and public affairs.

He died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, aged 77, and was buried in Danbury, Connecticut.
