John Joseph Martin (October 19, 1922 – August 7, 1997[1] ) was educated as a mechanical engineer, receiving a Ph.
He joined North American Aviation in 1951 and moved to the Bendix Corporation in 1953.
While on sabbatical at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough, Hampshire, Martin wrote "Atmospheric Reentry".
This book became the first and arguably the best in the open literature about designing reentry vehicles.
During 1973-1974 Martin served as an Associate Deputy Director at the Central Intelligence Agency and later as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Air Force.
