John Thomson was born on November 20, 1780, in the northern part of the Kingdom of Ireland.
[1][3] During the War of 1812, Thomson was part of a militia and was promoted to the rank of major general.
He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1826 to the Twentieth Congress.
