His focus was on "developing applications of formal methods of relational (network) analysis to the study of discourse in institutional systems.
He has also been a visiting professor at the Sapienza University of Rome and Maison des Sciences de L'Homme in Paris He was on the editorial boards of the several social sciences journals, including: Theory and Society, Sociological Theory, American Journal of Cultural Sociology, and Poetics.
[7] In 2002 he was elected to the chair of the Culture Section of the American Sociological Association, and in 2014 he was a Distinguished University Visiting Fellow at The New School for Social Research.
