Her main areas of research include U.S. History, Asian Americans, women, immigration, gender, and sexuality.
Aside from teaching, she has been involved in a variety of educational/activist efforts, such as speaking on C-SPAN, participating on the National Women's History Museum's Speaker Bureau,[1] advocating for Asian American and Pacific Islander education at Stanford University through SAPAAC (Strengthening Asian American Studies at Stanford),[2] working as an advisor for The Beginnings of Activism for the Department of Asian American Studies (BADAAS) at the University of California Irvine,[3] writing for Time magazine[4] writing for Ms.,[5] and editing for Amerasia Journal.
This project pushes students to examine how the vastness of the sea can bridge the gaps between the past, present, and future.
