It was the 22nd Municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, and was established on 15 March 2024.

Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration area has adjoined with the surrounding areas of Sankarapuram, Kottaiyur, Kandanur, and Puduvayal town panchayats; and village panchayats that includes Koviloor, Ariyakudi, Amaravathiputhur, Iluppaikkudi and Managiri.

The annual tax revenue of the corporation is expected to be about 57.25 crore rupees.

Karaikudi is one of the major educational cities and tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu and had a population of 303,291[2] and area of 94.31 km² as in 2023.

[4] The area of the city is about 33.75 km2, comprising the revenue towns of Kottaiyur, Kandanur, Puduvayal and Sankarapuram and Surrounding villages of Kalanivasal, Sekkalai Kottai, Ilupakkudi, Ariyakudi, Koviloor, Managiri and Senjai.
