Karangasem was devastated when Mount Agung erupted in 1963, killing 1,900 people.
Some records that contain the origin of the name Karangasem are as revealed in the Sading C Inscription found in Geria Mandara, Munggu, Badung.
In the historical research of the existence of the temple, Lempuyang is associated with the word Lampu which means chosen, and Hyang which means God (Bathara Guru, Hyang Parameswara).
