Karatta is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking the body of water known in Australia as the Southern Ocean and by international authorities as the Great Australian Bight.
Karatta is located about 191 kilometres (119 miles) south-west of the state capital of Adelaide.
[3][8][9] Its boundaries were created in 2002 in respect to “the long established name.”[2] Its western boundary is formed by the West End Highway in the north and by the Sanderson Fire Access Track in the south.
[2][10][11] The locality includes the Grassdale Homestead which is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.
[12] Karatta is located within the federal division of Mayo, the state electoral district of Mawson and the local government area of the Kangaroo Island Council.
