Kath Walker (scientist)

In 2023 Walker was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to wildlife conservation.

She conducted a national survey of the snails, and discovered a new species on Stockton Plateau, Powelliphanta augusta.

[1] Walker completed a PhD titled Systematics and phylogeography of the large land snail Powelliphanta at Massey University in 2018.

She led an advisory group that warned in 2024 of the likely extinction of many of New Zealand's native snails due to climate change and predation by rodents, pigs, hedgehogs and birds.

[3] In the 2023 New Year's Honours Walker was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to wildlife conservation.
