[5] Kawakawa Bay is defined by Statistics New Zealand as a rural settlement and covers 11.37 km2 (4.39 sq mi)[1] and had an estimated population of 670 as of June 2024,[2] with a population density of 59 people per km2.

[6] Kawakawa Bay-Orere statistical area, which also includes Ōrere Point, covers 210.06 km2 (81.10 sq mi)[1] and had an estimated population of 2,130 as of June 2024,[7] with a population density of 10.2 people per km2.

Before the 2023 census, the statistical area had a smaller boundary, covering 208.78 km2 (80.61 sq mi).

Although some people chose not to answer the census's question about religious affiliation, 51.4% had no religion, 36.1% were Christian, 0.6% had Māori religious beliefs, 0.6% were Hindu, 0.6% were Muslim, 0.5% were Buddhist and 1.7% had other religions.
