Kay Patterson (South Carolina politician)

Kay Patterson (January 11, 1931 – December 13, 2024) was an American politician who was a Democratic member of the South Carolina Senate, representing the 19th District from 1985 to his retirement in 2008.

After he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953 as sergeant, he completed requirements for the baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences at Allen University in 1956.

[5] Patterson won a special election to South Carolina State Senate District 19 in November 1985,[6] going on to serve as an outspoken legislator championing the cause of the poor and downtrodden.

Scott won a close fought Democratic primary runoff victory (75 votes) against Richland One School Board Chairman, Vince Ford[11][12] and went on to defeat United Citizens Party candidate Chris Nelums in the general election.
