[3] Gibbs attended Bellflower High School, for whom he played basketball for the Buccaneers.

[2][4][5] In 1994 after averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots a game with a 7' 3" arm span, he was second-team All-California Interscholastic Federation Division Three.

[6] He attended Pepperdine University, and played for the Waves for four seasons.

[2] Gibbs played for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball Premier League in the 2004–05 season, averaging 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and was named to the Israeli Basketball Premier League Quintet, the five best players of the season of the Israeli Basketball Premier League.

[9][10][11] He played for Riesen Ludwigsburg in the German Basketball Bundesliga in the 2008–09 season, averaging 8.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
