Kersten Steinke has served as a member of the Bundestag from the state of Thuringia from 1998 till 2002 and since 2005.

She then studied at the Economics Section of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg until 1981.

Afterwards she worked as a feed economist at the LPG (animal production) Bad Frankenhausen until 1983.

From 1983 to 1989 Steinke was secretary of the district executive committee of the Association of allotment gardeners, settlers and small animal breeders (VKSK) in Artern.
