Fukuoka Prefecture Kurate has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall.
During the Kofun period the area was the seat of the kuni no miyatsuko of Tsukushi, and the name "Kurate" is said to derive from a title given to the local prince by Emperor Kimmei for his exploits in a war to assist the Kingdom of Baekje.
