An abbreviation of the Hebrew name אֶלְעָזָר Eleazar or אֱלִיעֶזֶר Eliezer meaning 'God has helped'[1] which first appeared in Jewish Aramaic (see Lazarus and Eleazar ben Shammua.)
As a forename, it is more common in Slavic countries.
