It was the forests that first attracted settlers, as land to the south and east had already been cleared for farms.

The demand for lumber was great and professional land lookers were sent out to find the best timber tracts which could be bought for $1.25 or less per acre.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,159 people, 418 households, and 316 families residing in the township.

There were 537 housing units at an average density of 15.4 per square mile (5.9/km2).

20.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
