Leibnitz (crater)

Leibnitz is a huge lunar impact crater that is located in the southern hemisphere on the far side of the Moon.

Much of the interior floor of this walled plain has been resurfaced by lava, leaving a level, nearly featureless surface with the same low albedo as the dark lunar mare to the northwest.

The small crater Leibnitz X near the northwest inner wall has been flooded by lava, leaving only a roughly circular rim projecting above the surface.

The Leibnitz Swirls are part of a complex of similar features in the nearby Van de Graaff crater-pair and Mare Ingenii.

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Leibnitz.
