The Sui dynasty played a crucial role in the unification of China, setting the stage for a period of intellectual growth and educational advancement.

Despite this political change, the Tang dynasty continued to prioritize and support educational pursuits, contributing to the development of scholarly endeavors.

As part of the educational reform during the Tang dynasty, the teaching of mathematics at the Imperial Academy underwent a formal restructuring to enhance academic rigor.

In recognition of his advanced scholarly achievements, Li was appointed to a prestigious position within the Imperial Astronomy Bureau in 627, marking a significant milestone in his career as a court astronomer and historian.

He was given these titles because the Chinese calendar of the era, despite that it had only been used for several years, was already having accuracy problems in predicting eclipses.

Li wrote a document complaining about the use of outdated equipment in the Imperial Astronomy Bureau, so he was commanded to construct a new armillary sphere.

He began each annotation with the words "Your servant, Chunfeng, and his collaborators comment respectfully on…" Li did write some mathematical works of his own, little is known about them.

The book gets it title from a poem near the end, discussing how much time it would take to tell the story of thousands of years, it would be better to take a break and enjoy a massage.

Li wrote a book discussing the importance of astrology in Chinese culture called Yisizhan in 645.
