The law is designed specifically to deter recurrences of the 2013 Little India riot that took place with mobs under the influence of alcohol.
Since May 2014, a total ban of alcohol with closing of night schools and limitation of nightlife areas took effect.
The Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Bill was subsequently proposed and assented by the President of Singapore.
[2] Offences committed within the liquor control zones (LCZs) will result in a penalty of one and a half times that in non-designated areas.
[5] In view of feedback from these restrictions, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on 25 October 2018 that it will review the restrictions on alcoholic ice cream and other such food products with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and other stakeholders as it is unlikely that the consumption of such products will lead to alcohol abuse.
