The team is a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).

"Badger Bob" Johnson, who succeeded MacNeil in 1982, is the Flames' all-time leader in games coached and wins.

Doug Risebrough, Dave King, Pierre Page, Brian Sutter, Don Hay and Greg Gilbert all failed to lead the team past the first round as the Flames endured a 15-year period of playoff futility.

Though he did not win, Sutter earned a nomination for the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach as a result of the team's performance.

Mike Keenan was the head coach of the Calgary Flames from 2007 to 2009.
Darryl Sutter coached the Flames between 2003 and 2006. He returned to coach the team from 2021 to 2023.
Jim Playfair was the Flames' head coach in 2006–07.
