She then ran aground near Bambari Harbour (7°57′S 157°12′E / 7.950°S 157.200°E / -7.950; 157.200) but was bombed and destroyed the same day by American aircraft.
She has by then by almost totally evacuated by crew and troops and there were only 8 killed and 13 injured.
