World War II: The Clemson-class destroyer was bombed and damaged by Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft, then shelled and sunk in the Indian Ocean in 18,000 feet (5,500 m) of water some 200 miles (320 km) east of Christmas Island by Hiei and Kirishima (both Imperial Japanese Navy) with the loss of 146 of her 153 crew and 31 USAAF pilots.
World War II: Operation Drumbeat: The tanker was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (34°55′30″N 75°44′42″W / 34.92500°N 75.74500°W / 34.92500; -75.74500) by U-71 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of eleven of her 33 crew.
Survivors were rescued by USS Tarbell ( United States Navy).

She rammed the Normandie Dock drydock gates and later exploded killing about 350 people, mostly German military and some civilians.
