Nolan won a Best Actor Emmy Award reprising the part in 1955 TV play based on Wouk's tale of military justice.

For playing Doctor Morton Chegley to Diahann Carroll's nurse Julia Baker, Nolan was nominated for a 1969 Emmy for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series.

His last role was in Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters, which was released posthumously in 1986, the year after he died, bringing down the curtain on a career that spanned half a century.
