Louisa Bain

In her twenties she married a book and print seller named James Bain on 15 September 1825.

She wrote about mundane matters but also executions, catastrophes and notable deaths.

His nurse said she thought he was beyond communication, but nevertheless Gosse whispered the news into the dying writers ear.

Bain says that after Gosse left, James opened his eyes and said that the nurse should remove the candle and "spare his blushes".

Her diary is still kept within the family, and her grandson published excerpts from it in 1940 as A Bookseller Looks Back: The Story of the Bains.
