Louise Bachofen-Burckhardt

Louise Elisabeth Bachofen-Burckhardt (October 8, 1845 – February 21, 1920) was a Swiss philanthropist.

[1] She married anthropologist and antiquarian Johann Jakob Bachofen at age 25.

[1][2] During the last decades of her life, she collected about 300 paintings from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century, including works by artists Bartolomeo Vivarini, Jan Breughel the Elder, Hans Memling,[1][2] Hans Schäufelin[3] or Lucas Cranach the Elder.

[4] In 1904, she donated all of the works to a foundation in her late husband's name, with the Kunstmuseum Basel as its sole beneficiary.

[5] From 2019 to 2020, the Kunstmuseum Basel ran a special exhibition honouring Bachofen-Burckhardt, 100 years after her death.
