As an unincorporated community, Luzerne has no legally defined boundaries or population statistics of its own but does have its own post office with the 48636 ZIP Code.
It is located within the Huron National Forest about 20 miles (32.2 km) east of the city of Grayling.
[1] The East Branch Big Creek, a tributary of the Au Sable River, flows through the community with a small impoundment known as Luzerne Pond along its route.
A post office was established on November 4, 1881 under the name Luzerne, and Hagaman served as the first postmaster.
[10][11] Luzerne is served by Mio-Ausable Schools centered in the community of Mio just to the northeast.
