MV Akka was a cargo ship built at A/B Gotaverken, Gothenburg (Yard No 568), Sweden, launched on the 6 May 1942.
The ship measured 5,409 gross register tons (GRT).
[1] On 4 April 1956, Akka left Oxelosund with a cargo of iron ore bound for Glasgow, Scotland.
The ship entered the Firth of Clyde on 9 April 1956, that evening it grounded on the Gantocks rocks, due to machcanical failure of her steering gear.
Minutes after running aground Akka turned to port side and collapsed, hitting a number of lifeboats which were attempting to move away from the ship.
