[2] She began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge Marie L. Garibaldi of the New Jersey Supreme Court, from 1989 to 1990.

From 1998 to 2000, she was a partner at the law firm of Tompkins, McGuire, Wachenfeld & Barry, LLP, where her practice focused on civil litigation in Federal and State courts.

[5] On July 29, 2014, a hearing before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary was held on her nomination.

[7] On November 18, 2014, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed for cloture on her nomination.

On November 19, 2014, the United States Senate invoked cloture on her nomination by a 56–40 vote.
