It marked the debut of Alex Reade, replacing the band's previous keyboardist/vocalist Booka Nile who left earlier that year due to sexual assault allegations.

[19] Musically, Make Them Suffer bears a significant change in style for the band, adding more electronic influences and djent[20] to their usual deathcore and metalcore sound,[8] with riffs played on guitars tuned as low as drop E and heavy use of synth and keytar by Alex Reade in songs such as "Doomswitch".
