Petrenko represented Ukraine in elite competition for 15 years, in both the junior and senior levels.

In 1999, he won a bronze medal at the IFSC Climbing World Championships.

[1] Petrenko's career spanned from 1992 to 2007 and he competed in the IFSC Climbing World Championships seven times.

[2] He was notably victorious at the 1997 IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships in Imst[3] and earned a bronze medal in the men's lead competition at the 1999 UIAA Climbing World Championships in Birmingham.

[5] In 2024, Petrenko enlisted in the Ukrainian Armed Forces to fight in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
