He played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils and was selected by the Denver Nuggets as the 18th overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft.

[6] On November 2, 1987, Alarie was traded to the Washington Bullets alongside Darrell Walker in exchange for Jay Vincent and Michael Adams.

[7] He emerged as a role player for the Bullets during the 1989–90 season and averaged career highs in points (10.5), rebounds (4.6) and minutes (23.1) per game.
