Maryland Cookies

[1] Maryland cookies were first produced by Lyons in 1956 through its Blackpool subsidiary Symbol Biscuits.

[2] At the end of 1994, Lyons Biscuits was sold to Hillsdown Holdings, which in turn was acquired in 1999 by Hicks Muse Tate & Furst.

HMTF split off Hillsdown's biscuit manufacturing arm into the Horizon Biscuit Company, and when HMTF bought Burton's Foods in 2000, they merged it with Horizon.

[5] Over 12 billion Maryland Cookies are sold within Europe each year.

[6] The recipe for Maryland Cookies resembles a chocolate chip shortbread.
