Matthieu Cointerel

Matthieu Cointerel (Morannes[1] 1519 – 29 November 1585) also known as Matteo Contarelli, was a French Roman Catholic cardinal.

Matthieu Cointerel was born in Mérannes, Anjou in 1519, the son of Hilaire Contarelli, a blacksmith, and Guyone Viuan.

[2] Pope Gregory XIII made him a cardinal priest in the consistory of 12 December 1583.

[2] He received the red hat and the titular church of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio of 9 January 1584.

[2] He later participated in the papal conclave of 1585 that elected Pope Sixtus V.[2] He died in Rome on 29 November 1585.
