Islam completed his bachelor's and master's in economics from the University of Dhaka.
[2] He did his PhD at the University of New England (Australia) in water policy and governance.

[2] From July 2015 to February 2020, he was the deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia.
