[3] The township includes the northern two-thirds of the City of Melrose.

The area of Melrose Township was first settled in the 1840s and was formally founded in 1866.

At the 2000 census,[1] there were 772 people, 255 households and 207 families residing in the township.

There were 255 households, of which 42.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.3% were married couples living together, 2.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% were non-families.

14.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
