In 1947, Johnny Moore's Three Blazers recorded the tune, featuring vocals and piano by Charles Brown.

Subsequently, many performers have recorded renditions of the song, including Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, Otis Redding, B.B.

Lou Baxter, who was a songwriter and used to hang around Johnny Moore and the Blazers, said "Charles, I want you to do one of my songs because I need money."

[citation needed] Rock & roll musician Chuck Berry recorded a version of "Merry Christmas Baby".

Rock musician Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have been known to cover the song throughout the years and their live version was featured on the 1987 A Very Special Christmas album.

In November 2024, country singer Mason Ramsey included it on his Christmas EP named after the song.
